2016

Catalonia, with its inspiring art, culture, and countryside, offers an ideal destination for a painting retreat. An autonomous community of Spain, with its own language ("Cantlan"), cuisine, and rich history, Catalonia offers a diversity of intriguing destinations. Barcelona, known as the capital of Catalonia, is foremost among them with its unique architectural styles, impressive art and vibrant cultural scene.

Itinerary: Excursions in Barcelona include visits to Antoni Gaudi's innovative architecture such as La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera and Casa Batllo. We will also explore the best of Spanish art with visits to the Museu Picasso, Fundacio Miro, Fundacio Antoni Tapies, and the Museu of Contemporani. We will travel outside Barcelona to the famous pilgrimage centre of Montserrat (Serrated Mountain) including the Monestir de Montserrat founded in 1025, the 16th c. Basilica, and the excellent collection of modern art at the Meseu de Montserrat. Further sketching opportunities can be found in the atmospheric old quarter of Vic with its open air market, Roman remenants, Gothic cloister, and meandering Medieval streets. Painting sessions are held on the grounds of Parador de Cardona, with its commanding views of the surrounding countryside and town of Cardona.

Dates: Sunday August 21, 2016 to Tuesday August 30, 2016 (10 days/9 nights)

Accommodations: Parador de Cardona, Cardona, Spain -- this one of the most dramatic paradors in the country, situated in a hilltop setting in the fortified town of Cardona near the Muntanya de Sal (Salt Mountain) located approximately 60 miles from Barcelona. The hotel was built on the site of a castle and retains the authentic period flavor of the original 9th century fortified building -- it also boasts a picturesque 2nd century tower, an 11th century church, and a beautiful Roman patio with views of the salt hills, the medieval town of Cardona, and the Pyrenees in the distance. There is also a great restaurant -- truly a stunning place for a painting retreat.
